Tenby Museum visits Community groups across Pembrokeshire

On the 17th of April Tenby Museum’s Curator Mark Lewis and Events & Community Coordinator Chloe Ashton-Milton brought a slice of the museum’s history to the Memory Support Group in Haverfordwest.  The museum’s Dementia Friend’s trained staff delivered the session and the group were extremely grateful and especially enjoyed hearing about different pieces from the past centuries and their stories. The group got the opportunity to hear more about the museum’s culture and how they have built their reputation working with their volunteers and other charity collaborations in the area.  The day consisted of handling some rare objects, which sparked conversation of how the previous era lived and encouraged interaction and discussion.  There were some wonderful descriptions of how items were used, some dating back to the 19th century and some imaginative and inventive suggestions of what the items may have been.

Tenby Museum is looking to further develop their work with groups from the Alzheimer’s community and this year they are making plans to share more sensory sessions across Pembrokeshire.

If you are a community group, charity, or local club and would like the opportunity to benefit from hearing about the museums up and coming plans, historic tales or would like to have the chance to receive a show and tell session for a group, please get in contact with the museum on 01834 842809 or email the community co coordinator at: chloe@tenbymuseum.org.uk to arrange a visit.

Emma Ackerman, Occupational Therapist with the Memory Clinic/Young Onset Dementia Service, emailed the museum to say, “Many thanks for attending our group yesterday. It was evident how much they all enjoyed it and it got some lovely discussions going. Conversation can be difficult for people with dementia but it is easier when there is a focus that they can respond to and the objects you brought along certainly helped that.”
