The museum research library dates from the time of the museum’s opening. There are books on nearly every topic from the natural sciences through art, geology, costume, social history, warfare, cartography and archaeology.  The research library is available to researchers by appointment.  Just call the museum for further details.

The museum also has a large paper archive that comprises photographs and postcards, newspapers and a vast selection of primary resource material.  The archive is also available for research and is an ideal source for family historians, university students undertaking dissertations, schoolchildren with projects or just the casual researcher with an interest in the locality.  If your school is interested in undertaking research please do contact us.

The museum also has a large collection of items not currently on display which are available to researchers or visitors (by appointment).  These include natural history specimens, geological and archaeological finds, art and social history artifacts.  Some of these items will not be suitable for handling.  Please contact the museum if you require any further details or assistance – we are here to help.

The museum has a dedicated volunteer who also undertakes Family History inquiries using the museum’s vast archive and library facilities.
