Yesterday (11 December) we received a Christmas card from Mary Uzzell Edwards, the wife of the late, great Welsh artist John Uzzell Edwards. The card itself was a treat as it is always a pleasure to hear from Mary but wrapped up inside the envelope was a small sheaf of papers with a note which read, “For Tenby Museum, waiting by John Uzzell Edwards, found in his studio, gift to Tenby Museum with warm Christmas and 2016 wishes, Mary Uzz.”
John passed away in 2014 and his absence is strongly felt by the museum. He was a great friend to the museum and a great friend to me personally and I always relished a visit from him where he would regale us with colourful tales from his colourful past, of David Jones and Dylan Thomas and names of people only known by most through books.
The sheaf of papers contained two photographs of St Mary’s Church, Tenby and two delightful small paintings by John, one showing details of the church and one showing the exterior of church. The two works are absolutely beautiful and we are grateful to Mary for her continued friendship and generosity to the museum. We are hoping to get the church image framed in the new year to display in our art gallery.
